Stokin' the Fire
Brrrrr. It’s chilly in the cabin this morning. Maybe you remember the old song, ‘Put Another Log On The Fire’? I am not a fan of cold weather. I’ll try not to bore you with that statement too many times. Don’t you just love fall, though? The colors, food harvests, festivals, and the food. Oh, yeah, I said that. Can I just rant a bit about pumpkin spice, though? I mean pumpkin spice in e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g!! Stop! Okay, as a writer, I know I just crossed the line and over used the exclamation point. If you like all the spices, go for it. I don’t need pumpkin spice flavored toothpaste. Just sayin’.
Can you find the other supposed errors in the previous paragraph? They say almost never use exclamation points. Today’s publishers hate them. Instead, show the excitement with your words. Okay, I get that one. There are two other things displayed that I have a hard time with, for sure. Editors and beta readers keep telling me, “Don’t use the word ‘just’ so much.” The other is dropping the g on words. Sayin’, doin. havin, ridin’ and the like. Have I told you I’m from Oklahoma? And lived in Texas, Virginia, Maryland, Washington, DC, Alabama, Georgia, California, and now New Mexico? I’ve resided in so many states, mostly southern, my dialect is all messed up. See, here’s the deal. Most of my writing comes from my background, so this is the way a lot of my characters talk. For goodness’s sake, it’s how I talk. I try to watch it, while keeping the local flavor of my settings. They say you can get away with most anything if it’s in dialogue. ????
I appreciate those that have gone to my website, given comments, and joined the email list. Not only will you receive notice of happenings, but you can leave your thoughts on topics you’ve seen in my blogs.
It’s time for another log on the fire. Lookin’ forward to hearin’ from you! Oh, heck! Did it again.
